Firefox 3.1 beta 1: Faster than ever

Cory Blog, Software, Web

Here’s a quick and simple post:

I just downloaded Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 (for OSX, of course) and it’s crazy fast. Download.com informs us that the fastest settings are not turned on by default (who knows why) but it’s dead simple to turn the new javascript engine on. I’ve posted how below:

“To activate it, type “about:config” into the Smart Bar, then type “javascript.options.jit.content” into the filter. Double-click on the preference listed to change the boolean setting from “false” to “true.” Close the window and you should notice an immediate improvement to the JavaScript rendering speed.”

An overall “quick” tip with FF is to not run that many addons. I’m only running 2 at any given time (less is more): Adblock Plus + Quartz PDF plugin. Adblock plus works with this beta but the PDF plugin didn’t make the grade, but big deal. The quickness out weighs the use of inline pdfs. Another sweet change is the added “tab-switching shortcut that shows previews of the tab you’re switching to.” Press CRTL+Tab to show the graphical interface.

There are some other “milestone” changes but you can read about them at Mozilla.com. I hope they’ll add more Mac functionality in the final release.

If you DL FF (3.1) comment here and tell me what you think.
